This sample Direct Licensing Policy is designed for use by small record companies and independent artists (ie those not signed to a record label) that are licensors to the Phonographic Performance Company of Australia (PPCA). PPCA is a collecting society that grants certain licences relating to sound recordings and music videos. Licensees (i.e. businesses that want to play music in public) can obtain licences from the PPCA, Australasian Performing Right Association (APRA), Australasian Mechanical Copyright Owners Society Limited (AMCOS) through a one-stop-shop for music licensing which launched in mid-2019, OneMusic Australia.

The launch of OneMusic Australia does not directly affect licensors of music (i.e. record companies or independent artists) as you will still need to be registered with PPCA and APRA AMCOS to receive royalties from these collecting societies.

PPCA licensors must have a direct licensing policy in place. This sample Direct Licensing Policy has been developed to assist small record companies and independent artists to meet this requirement. For further details see the Arts Law Information Sheet PPCA Licensing.
