Wangka Maya – Copyright issues when reproducing art for posters
Artists in the Black (AITB) provided legal advice to Wangka Maya, an Aboriginal language organisation in regional Western Australia.
The organisation developed a set of illustrated posters dealing with common legal issues for Aboriginal artists in both English and Aboriginal languages. We were able to offer legal and best practice advice about the use of the illustrations on the posters. We also advised on the types of issues which come up commonly for Indigenous artists, including copyright and moral rights and Indigenous cultural and intellectual property (ICIP). This deals with the protection of aspects of Indigenous knowledge and heritage.
