Indigenous Intellectual Property Toolkit

About the Indigenous Intellectual Property Toolkit Project

The Cultural Ministers Council, through the Department of Environment, Water, Heritage and the Arts has recently engaged the Arts Law Centre of Australia (Arts Law) to deliver the Indigenous Intellectual Property (IIP) Toolkit. Cultural Ministers have acknowledged the need to effectively increase awareness of IIP and promote best practice.

The objectives of the Toolkit are to:

  • promote greater links between business and Indigenous communities in relation to IIP matters;
  • raise greater awareness among Indigenous communities, consumers and commercial operators of the need to protect IIP; and
  • enhance coordination of existing networks of Indigenous and non-Indigenous organisations working in the area of IIP.

The Toolkit will be delivered in progressive stages over three years. Activities that will be undertaken include the development of an Indigenous Portal in conjunction with the Arts Law website. The Indigenous website will provide user friendly information, podcasts and streaming of audio and audiovisual resources. Sound recordings for radio air play will also be developed in English and in language, as well as a DVD containing important messages about IIP. Arts Law will be creating a series of posters, articles and case studies that will be available on the website and also distributed throughout Indigenous communities. Finally, workshops will be run to provide training on IIP to Indigenous art centres and artists throughout Australia.

You can contact Arts Law on 1800 221 457 or artslaw@artslaw.com.au to find out more information on the IIP Toolkit and IP issues.
